Choose air freight when
- The shipment is urgent or supports a strict production deadline
- The cargo is relatively small, light, or valuable
- Long transit time would create a larger business cost
- You need frequent, smaller replenishment shipments
Choose sea freight when
- The cargo is large or heavy
- The shipment can be planned well in advance
- Transport cost per unit is the main priority
- A full container offers practical loading or handling advantages
Compare the complete cost
Do not compare only the airline or ocean rate. Include pickup, documentation, terminal handling, customs, storage risk, delivery, insurance, and the business cost of inventory being in transit.
A combined approach
Some importers use sea freight for planned inventory and air freight for urgent replenishment. This can protect availability without paying air rates for every unit.
Compare the same scope
Ask whether each option includes pickup, origin handling, export formalities, main transport, destination handling, customs support, delivery, insurance, and expected free time. Transit estimates should state where the clock starts and ends.
