FCL or LCL?
Full container load
FCL gives one shipper use of a container and is often suitable for larger volumes, regular imports, or cargo that benefits from fewer handling points.
Less than container load
LCL combines smaller consignments in one container. It can be more economical when the cargo does not justify a full container, although consolidation adds handling and time.

How a sea shipment moves
- Plan the load: confirm cargo dimensions, weight, packaging, Incoterm, and readiness.
- Book and collect: arrange the container or LCL space, origin pickup, and export handling.
- Load and sail: cargo is delivered to the carrier or consolidator and moves on the booked vessel routing.
- Prepare arrival: the bill of lading, invoice, packing list, permits, and importer information should be ready before the vessel arrives.
- Release and deliver: customs, terminal, container, and inland-transport requirements are coordinated.
Costs beyond the ocean rate
A useful comparison includes origin handling, documentation, freight, destination terminal charges, customs work, duties and taxes, inspections, storage risk, container detention or demurrage, and inland transportation. The cheapest ocean line item can produce a more expensive total if the routing or free-time terms do not fit the shipment.
Container planning matters
Packaging, weight distribution, loading access, cargo compatibility, and destination unloading all affect the practical container choice. LCL cargo should be packed for additional handling during consolidation and deconsolidation. FCL cargo still requires accurate weights and a loading plan even when the container is not full.
